A Recipe for Success - Late Summer Colour Planter

Summer may be winding down, but there is no reason that your garden or flowering planters have to! Or perhaps you just never got around to planting up your containers in the spring. Well don't fret! In this 'Recipe for Success' post we will walk you through using our stunning organically grown bedding plants - which will be all 70% off from August 16-19!

For this planter we really wanted to channel the bright, sunny, and warm feelings of August by using a collection of bedding plants in orange, white, red, green and silver. It is bright, cheerful and has a nod to the upcoming Pumpkin Spice season. This flowering planter will easily carry you through the rest of summer, beyond back to school and onward towards fall. The plants that were chosen would work best in a sun to part sun location.

Shopping List

  • 1 - 4" 'Copper Prince Ornamental Millet' Pennisetum

  • 1 - 4" 'Silverdust' Dusty Miller

  • 1 - 4" 'Taishan Orange' African Marigold

  • 1 - 4" 'Little Lucky Red' Lantana

  • 1 - 4" 'Big Kiss Yellow Flame' Gazania

  • 1 - 4" 'Big Kiss White' Gazania

  • GardenPro Hanging Basket Slow Release Fertiliser

  • MySoil Potting Soil

Step 1

We begin our project with this lightweight plastic pot which is textured and neutral. I love the earthy style of the pot since I think it will easily transfer season to season.

Fill the pot with a good quality container soil, like MySoil Potting Soil. Mix 2-3 tablespoons of the GardenPro Hanging Basket Slow Release Fertiliser 14-14-14 with the soil. By adding the slow release fertiliser you will ensure that your plants and blooms will be fed for the next 4 months.

Step 2

Remove the millet, dusty miller, and marigold from their pots and gently loosen the soil and roots. Shift the soil aside to make space for the plants.

Next place the Millet at the back side and centre of the planter and flank it with the Dusty Miller to the left and Marigold to the right.

Step 3

Now, unpot the Gazanias as you did with the other plants. Place the 'Big Kiss Yellow Flame' Gazania in front of the Dusty Miller and the 'Big Kiss White' Gazania in front of the Marigold. This creates a contrast between the plants, showcasing each of their unique colours and features.

Next, plant the last of our bedding plants, the 'Little Lucky Red' Lantana, in between the two Gazanias. This draws together the beautiful shades of orange, red, yellow and white.

Step 4

Top up the planter with more soil, filling any gaps which may have appeared during the planting. Water thoroughly, as in this heat your plants are going to struggle more easily. Now stand back and admire your work!
